These pupils had participated eagerly in the children-only vote to determine who would take on the newly created role of play champion, and even wrote to Bradford Council to express thanks for being consulted.
Unfortunately they had opted for Cole's rival in the two-horse race, Brian Cheeseman, course leader and principal lecturer in playwork at Bradford Metropolitan University. "The first thing I had to do was apologise for not being Brian," laughs Cole.
The children wanted to know how Cole would live up to his key manifesto pledge of extending their "play zones", the area around their homes in which children feel free and safe to move and play.
