Inspections: Assessments to be improved next year

Next year's annual performance assessment of councils will be improved, inspectors said this week after a survey revealed what local authorities wanted changed.

In December, Ofsted and the Commission for Social Care Inspectionpublished the first integrated assessments of local children's services.An evaluation of this process revealed councils thought the staff costsinvolved in the assessment were "very high".

The process will now be "improved". Clearer guidance on self-assessmentwill also be issued.
