In its response to the Government consultation issued last week, Ofstedsays the functions of the commission's children's rights director shouldbe transferred to the children's commissioner. But the commission hasargued strongly for the role to be part of the new super inspectorate'saying that it would contribute strongly to the watchdog'sresponsibility for safeguarding and promoting the rights and welfare ofchildren.
Ofsted also says the super inspectorate should be called Ofsted becausethe name has strong brand recognition and parents see it as a mark of"authoritative, independent and reliable judgment".
But the commission argues that retaining the brand name would onlyreinforce the impression that the focus of the super inspectorate is onlearning at the expense of welfare. The commission says it is vital theinspectorate is seen as a new and distinct organisation.
