Inspection: Earlier guidance for councils planned

Plans for this year's annual performance assessments look set to shorten the process, according to children's services directors.

Extra work and confusion was caused by severe delays in sending outguidance on self-assessments, which initiate inspections, last year. However, the arrangements, sent to local authorities last week, revealguidance will be sent out in March, well ahead of the submissiondeadline of 31 May.

And the final letter by the inspectorates, Ofsted and the Commission forSocial Care inspection, will be sent out by the end of October, a monthearlier than last year.

David Hawker, director of children's services in Brighton & Hove, saidthe plans would streamline the process. "They're trying to bring thingstogether in a coherent way as possible and should be given credit forthat."
