Youth Justice North East, which was launched in 2000, is described as aform of restorative justice.
The programme gives young offenders the chance to see how their actionshave changed the lives of the victim and often the victim's family.
Up to 30 per cent of victims and nine out of 10 offenders agree tomediation. Project manager Peter Lowe believes the participation rate isso high because mediators from The Children's Society always listen towhat participants have to say.
