Gill Frances, director of children's development at the National Children's Bureau, recalls the first time she saw Mediate (Multi-sensory Environment Design for an Interface between Autistic and Typical Expressiveness) in action at an event in Portsmouth. "All the children were very withdrawn when they first saw it," she says.
"But once they had taken the step in they opened up. It gave them a huge amount of satisfaction."
