Plastic photo cards are currently being used in two youth centres - the Two Wheel Centre and BUMPS - which run motorcycle and go-karting activities for 11- to 25-year-olds.
Every time young people visit the centre they swipe their cards, allowing the system to collect information about the sessions they attended, their progress, medical history and other relevant information such as emergency contacts.
Lindsay Collingwood, development manager for management information systems at Hull City Council, said: "We believe we are the first local authority to use membership cards with bar codes for our management information systems." She added: "The cards have been well received by young people and some of the local shops are already accepting them as proof of identification."
