Information sharing: Bichard influences integrated system

The new electronic systems that local authorities will use to hold detailed case information on children receiving social services will have to support recommendations made by Sir Michael Bichard in his report into the Soham murders.

In a circular to councils in England, the Department for Education and Skills said that when there is an allegation of sexual abuse of a child, a record should be created on the child's integrated children's system record indicating whether or not the allegation was reported to the police.

The circular said councils should have their integrated children's system up and running by 1 January 2007. It also highlighted the difference between the integrated children's system and the information-sharing index brought in under the Children Act, which will hold limited information on all children.
