Individual tuition helps care leavers

Peer mentoring and individual tuition improves the outcomes of care leavers, work by the What Makes the Difference? Project has found.

The project set up a number of pilots to examine different approaches as it felt the views of young people in care were not being listened to by those in authority, such as government, social services and councillors.

John Hill, the What Makes the Difference? Project's service manager, said: "We wanted to pilot some initiatives to see if targeting resources in this way could make a difference to how much young people achieved."

Children given one-to-one tuition showed a significant improvement in exam results, said area manager Mike Sutcliffe. "We found in a couple of local authorities GCSE exam results were significantly better than predicted," he said.
