In Work, Better Off: Next Steps to Full Employment

A key element of the government initiative to eradicate child poverty is a plan to get out-of-work parents back into full-time employment. This consultation sets out proposals to change the support offered to those most disadvantaged in the labour market.

A "jobs pledge" is being put forward, which will buildon Local Employment Partnerships announced inthe 2007 Budget. The government is aiming for majoremployers, in both the private and public sectors,to offer a quarter of a million job opportunities. These opportunities will be for people who might struggle to hold down a job, such as lone parents and those on incapacity benefits, but who are ready, willingand able to work.

Other key proposals include a new social contract with lone parents that expects an eventual move into work in return for the necessary support, and a revised New Deal package to deliver tailored support to individuals - including young people - and an integrated skillsand employment agenda.
