In the News: Lancaster Council on rocky ground after dumping boulders in children's play area

2 mins read
It seems one person's play feature is another's useless, obstructive boulder, as Lancaster City Council has discovered. It has taken some flak after introducing some exciting new features, or rocks, to a children's play area.

"Residents on a Morecambe estate are fuming this week after the city council dumped boulders onto a play area in a bid to stop children playing football," reported local newspaper The Visitor. "We can't believe they've put these rocks in the middle of the grass," one angry resident said.

But the council was defiant and said the boulders had been carefully placed in that spot after consultation with residents, police and councillors. "The rocks can be used by children as seating or an item of play," explained a spokesman. Presumably they consulted the children, too?

A five-year-old boy from Ireland who was wrongly accused of stealing a bag of crisps was awarded more than £6,000 in damages for defamation of character by supermarket Lidl, reported many, including The Daily Mail.
