The classic car from the 1968 film was set to star in the Lord Mayor of Norwich's procession but police said it couldn't take part without a valid MOT certificate. "We can't make exceptions - even for a fun, family occasion," a spokesman said. Council organisers said they were bitterly disappointed, although children and Chitty fans will still be able to see the car in a forthcoming show at the Norwich Theatre Royal.

Theatre spokesman John Bultitude was not impressed with the police's decision. "It would have been easier if Chitty really did fly, as a pilot's licence takes around only 45 hours to obtain," he said. What - you mean the car can't really fly?
