The government has unveiled plans to give children's centres a new legal status, which should ensure their long-term future. The closing date for comments on the proposals is 6 November. www.dcsf.gov.uk/consultations

Two free conferences will look at how education and children's services can tackle issues like teenage pregnancy and youth unemployment through partnership work and extended schools. The events are on 21 October in Manchester and 23 October in London. Register at www.glasgows.co.uk/nsc

Schools and children's centres have until 21 October to enter this year's Schools ETC Awards, which recognise excellence in extended and community services. The awards, which feature a first prize of £2,000, are open to members of ContinYou's Schools ETC Network. www.continyou.org.uk

Culture secretary Andy Burnham will be the keynote speaker at a conference on boosting children's access to culture, creativity and the arts, including the important role of extended schools. The event is on 16 October in Liverpool. 020 7324 4372
