Young parents, especially teenage mums and dads, are among the most vulnerable groups children's centres work with.

These young people face all the challenges of being new parents while they are still growing up themselves. It's important for centres to remember that play and parenting sessions may not appeal to teenage parents. Most will need extra, intensive support.

1. Children's centres must pay particular attention to the needs of teenage parents in their area. Teenage mums and dads will need tailored support that could include specialist midwifery and health visitor services, outreach work and one-to-one mentoring. Offer activities that young people will enjoy, such as day trips or sports, and build up trust before leading on to talking about smoking, breastfeeding, contraception and returning to education.
