Play is crucial for children's development and wellbeing, but in school life it can sometimes be pushed to one side.

As schools increasingly offer before- and after-school care, the need to provide good-quality play opportunities becomes all the more important. Children's centres and early years settings also need to think about how to maximise opportunities for play. Here are some practical steps you can take.

Make sure there is adequate space for play. You need to ensure different types of play, such as team games, role-play and ball games, can happen in the same area without children falling over one another. If you have limited space then you can consider setting out different play equipment on different days but you must do that in consultation with children to find out what they want.
