In Practice: Health and safety must improve

1 min read
Out-of-school providers can tighten up on health and safety by taking simple steps such as issuing visitor badges, erecting signs designed by children and undertaking regular risk assessments, say experts.

A recent Ofsted report urged all childcare providers to improve in thisarea. However, it highlighted that out-of-school provision generally hada worse basic safety record than other kinds of childcare.

The report found the best settings had clear child safety proceduresthat were shared with parents, employed suitable and well-qualifiedstaff and assessed and managed risks effectively.

Claire Pentin, head of programmes at 4Children, said providers couldimprove by taking a range of practical and relatively simple steps.

The report urged providers to take more care in supervising entrancesand exits to avoid children slipping out unnoticed.

"Install adult-height handles on all main entrances and leave clearmessages on doors for parents and volunteers to ensure all doors areclosed properly," Pentin advised.
