In Practice: Design teams to help councils

Teams of design experts are being deployed by the Government as part of a two-year programme to help local authorities develop the second wave of children's centres.

The news emerged at Children Now's recent Sustainable Children's Centresconference, where delegates asked whether the Government understood thechallenge councils face in rolling out huge numbers of centres.

Kevin Woods, of the Sure Start, Extended Schools and Childcare Group atthe Department for Education and Skills, said the Governmentacknowledged the size of the task and would provide practical help.

Consultants from government advisers the Commission for Architecture andthe Built Environment (CABE), who have experience of capital builds,will provide authorities with "intense support," he added.

He said: "Through a contract with CABE, we're providing help to localauthorities, helping them to get best value for money, ensuring buildsare delivered on time, and training up staff so that they have the rightskills."
