Under the Childcare Act 2006, councils were required to complete achildcare sufficiency assessment by 31 March 2008.
But a letter from a government regional office asking consultants tohelp councils improve their assessments says: "Following an appraisal,the Dep-artment for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has identifieda need to support authorities in ensuring assessments are fit forpurpose." It also asks consultants to help councils "take account ofchanges in the market as a result of the current financial climate andthe impact on families as well as providers".
Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance'said he believed the government's concerns are due to councils usingout-of-date figures.
