Childcare: Councils scrutinise provision progress

Councils across England are scrutinising local childcare needs as they gear up to check whether their services are meeting demand.

Councils in Herefordshire, Somerset and Wakefield are among thosecarrying out detailed analyses. Under the Childcare Act councils mustassess the nature, extent, need and supply of childcare to see ifexisting facilities are meeting all needs.

In most cases, councils are handing the work over to consultants tocarry out surveys and report back. Bryan Twitty, childcare informationservice manager at Herefordshire County Council, said: "We already haveinformation about the number and type of childcare places availablewithin local communities, but we need to build on this to see ifexisting care meets demand."

Once the assessments are complete, councils will be able to look at anyunmet childcare needs within their authority areas and begin work todevelop any new services needed.
