In Focus: Children's centres supporting separated families

In practice

Separated parents in Essex will be among the first in England to get extra support in arranging their finances thanks to a pilot programme from the Child Maintenance Options service.

The programme aims to help parents meet their child maintenance arrangements by providing training for children's centre staff to help identify and support separated parents. The six-month pilot offers parents group discussion sessions, workshops and face-to-face home visits for those who require follow-up support after setting up a child maintenance arrangement.

It was launched in eight 4Children children's centres in Essex last month. The centres were selected because they cater for parents of children aged from birth to 19 rather than just under-fives. The programme expects to help raise awareness of the importance of both parents staying involved in the child's upbringing - emotionally and financially.
