PROJECT
Bridging London Project
FUNDING
£162,000 to support 676 11- to 24-year-olds in 2014 from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme, Children in Need and John Lyon's Charity
BACKGROUND
The number of unaccompanied asylum seekers aged under 18 has risen sharply in recent years. Charity Young Roots' Bridging London Project works in Barnet and Croydon to support this vulnerable group with a range of issues including housing, learning English, legal matters, and emotional and psychological support. "These young people have often suffered trauma in their home countries and on their journey to the UK," says Young Roots chair Jonathan Mawby.
ACTION
Around half the young people supported by the project have been separated from their families and come to the UK alone. The charity helps reduce their isolation by providing them with a safe space to socialise and access support, through peer support programmes, weekly youth groups and weekend and holiday activities.
