PROJECT

Philosophy for Children (P4C)

FUNDING

Usually costs schools between £30 and £40 per pupil, covering training and support for teachers to deliver the programme over three years. The evaluated programme was funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and cost around £3,940 per primary school a year for training and materials.

BACKGROUND

Philosophy for Children (P4C) was first developed in the US in 1970 by Professor Matthew Lipman, who established the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children. Twenty years later, a BBC programme showing P4C being practised in a challenging US school sparked widespread interest in the UK and led to the establishment in 1992 of the Oxford-based Society for the Advancement of Philosophical Enquiry and Reflection in Education (Sapere).
