Project
CAP (Child Assault Prevention) UK
Purpose
To reduce children's vulnerability to abuse
Funding
Nearly £101,000 in the 2014/15 academic year, mainly met by grants from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme, The Linnet Trust and fees from schools equivalent to £3.50 per child
Background
CAP is a school-based approach to preventing child abuse that was developed in the US and launched in the UK in 1995 in Devon. It currently works with around 45 schools across the county each year. In 2014/15 it reached more than 8,000 primary school children and saw 228 secondary school pupils trained in healthy relationships and online safety.
Action
CAP's primary school programme starts with a 1.5-hour parents' workshop, where facilitators explain the content so mums, dads and carers can support the learning at home. Parents learn how abuse happens and share ideas on keeping children safe.
