An admin job at a youth centre led to Kay Nicker developing a passion for helping young people.

Did you go to a youth club?

I actually used to come here to Bulmershe Youth Centre in Woodley, where I've ended up as youth worker.

So you always wanted to be a youth worker?

I hated school and just wanted to get married and have kids. When I was 16 I thought I'd try hairdressing, so I did a three-year apprenticeship and then worked until I had my kids. By 1994, I wanted to work part-time again and I got an admin job at the youth centre.

Then what happened?

I started helping out as a part-time youth worker. That grew and I started working with excluded young people and later with a voluntary group in Woodley.
