Gerry Hannah talks about how he beat his dyslexia to get into youth work.

How was your upbringing? My mum died when I was 12 and I grew up at a time in Glasgow when they were knocking down the Gorbals and things were very violent. But I was very active in youth groups, such as the Sea Cadets, swimming clubs and a local boxing club, and the values of the men who ran those had a big impact on me.

How was school? I was dyslexic and left school without any qualifications. I worked mainly as a labourer, before spending 10 years at an insurance company. I was very successful but I lost faith in myself.
