Getting a proper job
Getting a “proper” job 25 years ago with an investment company gave me all the grounding I needed to run a business, which is just like running a charity but usually with less money involved! Finance isn’t widely considered to be an inspirational career path, but the skills I learned during my time in the sector are what help me to run our charity efficiently now and provide services to some of society’s most vulnerable young people in the process. Having specialised in process and efficiency previously means I understand things like accounting and how to break down and solve complex business issues, ultimately for the benefit of young people who rely on us to support them with some of life’s most difficult issues. It’s a professional background that has set me up to support others in the voluntary sector and, together with my passion for boxing, has worked out very well.
