Authority
Milton Keynes
Purpose
To reduce accidents in the home and emergency hospital admissions among children
Funding
The project was funded by Milton Keynes Council and cost £1,665
Background
Three key factors led to a cluster of children's centres in west Milton Keynes teaming up to offer first aid courses to parents and childcare workers. Local health data showed emergency hospital admissions for under-17s had increased and were higher than average for the rest of the town. At the same time community dieticians reported some parents were reluctant to wean young children onto solid food because of choking fears with potential impact on children's health and nutrition and speech and language development. Finally, parents themselves had requested first aid training via children's centre forums.
