Skills for the Job: First aid for babies and children

2 mins read Careers Early Years Health
Everyone working in a childcare setting should be able to respond effectively when faced with an incident requiring first aid knowledge.

How important is it to know first aid when working with babies and children?

It is absolutely vital. Minor accidents and small injuries are far from uncommon in a childcare setting. Even with close supervision, scrapes, bruises, cuts, bangs and bumps are a normal occurrence. As well as minor injuries it's also important to remember that more serious injuries can and do occur. In fact emergency admission rates for children under 15 in the UK have increased by 28 per cent in the past decade so it has never been more important to ensure that people working with children have up-to-date knowledge of first aid. If first aid is given quickly and accurately after an incident it can and will save lives. A rapid response is a crucial part of effective first aid.
