Under-25s are one of the key groups the Department for Work and Pensions hopes will benefit from the flat-rate Local Housing Allowance, which is designed to provide claimants with greater certainty over the support they will get after accepting a job.
The allowance provides a standard rate based on the cost of living in the area and the amount of space needed by the recipient. It will be introduced in nine further areas from April next year - Argyll & Bute, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Guildford, Norwich, Pembrokeshire, Salford, south Norfolk, St Helens and Wandsworth.
It will be paid directly to all but the most vulnerable tenants, rather than landlords, to give them greater independence.
