Figures from Get Connected, a free national support helpline for under-25s, show that 30 per cent of its 7,338 calls in the first six months of 2003 were from young men.
Young women were likely to call earlier; young men tended to wait until a problem had become serious and needed immediate help. Twenty-three per cent of male callers wanted advice about sexuality.
Justin Irwin, director of Get Connected, said: "Sexuality is probably the most difficult issue for any 16-year-old to bring up, and they want practical help." Figures for other services show that 23 per cent of the 112,825 in-depth calls to ChildLine in the 12 months to March 2002, and 25 per cent of the 5,479 telephone and web-chatroom enquiries to Connexions Direct during July this year, were from young men.
