Help from: Crossroads - Caring for Carers

There are around 175,000 young carers in the UK, and their contribution is being recognised this week during Carers Week 2005, which runs from 13 to 19 June.

One organisation that offers respite for young carers, as well as adult carers, is Crossroads - Caring for Carers, a charity that provides support and allows them to take a break from caring for relatives.

Established in 1974, it now has around 200 member schemes across England and Wales. The charity's trained care support workers will take over carers' responsibilities for an agreed time.

Many of its schemes provide extra services, including holiday play schemes for disabled children.

The charity's web site includes a scheme finder for people to locate a carers' scheme in their area.
