Foster carers help remand children

1 min read Social Care Youth Justice
Foster carers are being brought in to help Tower Hamlets teenagers awaiting trial or sentencing to turn their lives around.

The London borough will put 10- to 17-year-olds facing imprisonment in the care of specially-trained remand foster carers. The borough hopes the extra support from the carers will improve young people's behaviour and provide courts with an alternative to custody.

Stuart Johnson, manager of Tower Hamlets Youth Offending Team, said: "Any intervention with real quality or depth has a chance of turning young people around and I think this approach has a lot of potential."

The carers will be paid up to £500 a week and receive training on the justice system. Young people may live with carers but might also receive regular visits from them if already remanded in custody.
