Healthy towns can cut child obesity

1 min read Health
The government's healthy towns initiative can play an important role in reducing childhood obesity, according to child health campaigners.

Each town in England is being invited to bid for up to £5m to make their community more healthy and active under the scheme, which was announced earlier this week.

The Healthy Communities Challenge Fund is the next step in the government's obesity strategy Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives. The Department of Health said local authorities and primary care trusts must show a joint commitment to the project to get funding.

George McNamara, public affairs manager at NCH, said the project was an opportunity for towns to build on existing services. "If this money is to work, it must build on and further initiatives that are already in place, for example, those in schools and children's centres," he said.
