The Healthy Communities Challenge Fund

1 min read Health
What it is: The Department of Health has launched a fund to help English towns tackle obesity.

The scheme is part of the government's obesity strategy Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives. Currently, a third of children in England are either overweight or obese.

How much is on offer: In total, there is £30m available. Towns can bid for up to £5m to gain the status of a "healthy town". To be eligible for the money, towns must show that they are already committed to improving residents' health through initiatives such as being a play pathfinder or local food schemes. The towns must also show that there is commitment across the primary care trust and local authority.

What it will fund: Designated healthy towns can use the money to fund innovative ways to improve the health of their community through projects such as increasing the number of cycle lanes, walking-promotion schemes and providing healthy food initiatives.
