As expected, these recommendations include introducing stringentstandards, based on the Caroline Walker Trust guidelines, whichstipulate the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals required formeals.
"The proposed timescales of 2008 for primary schools and 2009 forsecondary schools should be seen as the deadline for the last schools,not as a target for the majority," said education secretary RuthKelly.
The audit will assess progress on introducing healthier food. It willalso examine how much is spent on ingredients, whether children get hotor cold meals, and how many pupils buy the meals.
The panel estimates the cost of implementing its recommendations isabout 167m in the first year and 159m for the next twoyears. In March, the Government pledged 220m over three years tosupport the changes.
