Education News: School meals - Government panel wins sector praise

The Government has been commended for including some of its critics on a new panel that will play a key role in the drive to improve school dinners.

The School Meals Review Panel contains representatives from the Child Poverty Action Group, the Caroline Walker Trust and the Health Education Trust.

The panel has been asked to develop the draft minimum nutritional standards that will be rolled out to schools in the autumn.

Joe Harvey, director of the Health Education Trust, said: "People like me are not teddy bears, we want to ensure that the job is done and we would not have been invited if they wanted an easy ride.

"I've been critical of the Government for failing to take action swiftly enough in the past, but as a confirmed sceptic I am clear that it intends to take this extremely seriously and come out with very clear and useful recommendations for change."
