Suffolk wins praise for improving participation

Suffolk children's services department has been commended for its "culture of participation" just a year after inspectors told the council to improve its recording of children's views.

In the latest unannounced inspection, Ofsted inspectors found that children and young people in Suffolk are consulted with and their views taken into consideration when assessing their needs and planning services.

During the two-day inspection in July, inspectors considered the "highly effective" advocacy arrangements, targeted schemes in partnership with the voluntary sector, and the recording of children’s views as strengths.

Inspectors also found that there is no unallocated work and caseloads are manageable, an area which in last year’s report had been highlighted as an area for priority action.

The report said: "Service users’ views are taken into consideration in both assessments of their needs and service planning. The culture of participation is supported by highly effective advocacy arrangements, with targeted schemes in place in partnership with the voluntary sector, for both children and adults with a learning difficulty.
