Doncaster wins praise for safeguarding improvements

Inspectors have praised Doncaster Council for turning around the performance of its children's services department.

A joint inspection by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said there has been "significant progress" following two years of upheaval for the department. This included a raft of critical inspection reports and government intervention in 2009.

Social worker recruitment and retention had also improved. This had reduced the council’s reliance on agency staff and gave the social work team much needed stability.

But concerns remain regarding the health of looked-after and vulnerable children. Inspectors rated the council’s work in this areas as inadequate, the lowest mark they can give. Doncaster was rated as adequate in all other areas.
