Health News: Sure start - Dental surgery to prioritise children

Families with young children will be able to register first with a new dental surgery thanks to Sure Start funding the surgery's refurbishment.

The move is part of a regeneration project on the Woodside estate inTelford that will see the estate benefit from a multi-use centre, whichwill provide a dental surgery as well as other community services.

Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust's oral health dental promotion teamworked with Jubilee Sure Start on the facility, which will provide twofull-time NHS dentists.

Acting programme manager Scott Jones said the estate had never had adentist before, leading to children suffering from tooth decay foryears.

In extreme cases, they found it difficult to eat.

"Poor families suffer from double oppression. Their health problems areexacerbated by the fact that it's virtually impossible to access an NHSdentist," said Jones.
