Health News: Speech and language - Web site to help identify difficulties

An information service to help health visitors identify speech, language and communication difficulties (SLCDs) in children has been launched this week.

The Starting Point web site was launched by the charity I Can after it found that health visitors wanted more information on key stages of children's speech and language development, and practical advice and strategies for language development that they could share with families.

The service, funded by the Department of Health, enables health visitors to ask questions of expert professionals working with SLCD. It also provides information on multi-disciplinary working between speech and language therapy departments and health visitors, and on relevant training courses.

Mary Hartshorne, project manager of Starting Point, said it was particularly important for health visitors and speech and language therapists to work more closely together.
