Health News: Sexual health - Condoms are not used effectively

Teenagers connect condom use with avoiding pregnancy but not with sexually transmitted infections, researchers have warned.

The verdict follows a survey of 1,400 14- to 18-year-olds by researchersat Southampton University.

Of the 373 young people who had recently used condoms, more than one in20 put them on too late to prevent them from catching infections, butearly enough to prevent conception.

Researcher Nicole Stone said it was important to emphasise sexuallytransmitted infections during demonstrations of condom use, as youngpeople often only connected them with the risk of getting pregnant.
