Health News: Scotland - Fears over cuts to national hospital

Doctors fear the size of Scotland's new national hospital for children will be reduced by up to a quarter.

Officials have told senior clinicians that NHS planners will not be ableto deliver the promised floor space for the Glasgow-based replacementfor Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children with the 100mgrant promised by the Scottish Executive.

It is thought plans are under way to draw up a joint private financeinitiative (PFI) to help pay for the site in Yorkhill, reneging on allprevious promises that it would be publicly funded.

Sandra White, a Scottish National Party MSP for Glasgow, said staff hadreported that the private funding of the Royal Hospital for SickChildren had led to smaller rooms and fewer beds.

However, she said the PFI plan was unlikely to go ahead because theexecutive, which has to approve the plans, is preparing itself forScotland's May elections.
