Health: 100m for Glasgow children's hospital

A new paediatric and maternity hospital in Glasgow will be built within five years backed by 100m of funding from the Scottish Executive.

The hospital will replace the current Queen Mother's maternity hospital and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, which were under the threat of closure but will remain open for now after a change of heart by health minister Malcolm Chisholm.

He has also appointed an advisory group to monitor plans for the co-location of the paediatric and maternity services with adult clinical services.

Chisholm said he been persuaded of the importance of the hospitals after listening with "great care" to the "large body of public opinion" that had opposed the closures.

The new unit is likely to be away from the hospitals' current site in Glasgow's West End.
