Health News: Public health - Wanless suggests children's targets

Treasury adviser Derek Wanless, whose long-awaited report into the provision of public health services was criticised for lacking teeth (News, 3-9 March), has argued that health objectives for children should be set.

He told Children Now: "For all the key determinants of health, people will need to think through the aspects that influence children and what can be done to improve children's health."

Wanless said he expected national children's targets for sexually transmitted diseases, obesity and physical activity. And he said local objectives should be set for children living in deprived areas.

The former NatWest banker has written two reports for the Government recommending cost-effective ways to improve population health and reduce health inequalities.

Wanless told a conference last week that if people were slow to engage in their own health it would create a "nightmare picture for the UK".
