Unison general secretary Dave Prentis called for a national school meals service, school food policies and monitoring of nutritional standards in schools.
"Schools and school meals can play a key role in educating children about how we avoid the dangers of obesity and bad health linked to diet," he said.
Obesity, smoking and sexually transmitted diseases will be discussed by voluntary groups, health professionals, industry, media and the public.
A white paper on public health will be published later this year.
