The play sector has hit out at play being left out of the Government's action plan for public health. The criticism followed the launch of Health Challenge England, a document spelling out the Government's next steps in implementing the Choosing Health white paper.

Speaking at the launch of the document, Caroline Flint, the minister forpublic health, said her top priority would be reducing obesity inchildren and adults. The Government plans to launch an obesity campaignnext year using "social marketing" techniques based on targeting changeat individual groups.

Despite officials forecasting that the Department of Health would notmeet its target to halt child obesity by 2010, Flint said she was"committed to doing everything we can to reach it. Targets focus minds, attention and productivity."

The document emphasises the role of local government in planning publichealth and greater cross-departmental working. But Adrian Voce, directorof the Children's Play Council, said he was disappointed that thedocument did not mention play.
