Health News: Prescribing - Children's version of guide is planned

The first children's version of the UK's prescribing guide will be published next year.

At last week's British National Formulary's annual conference, Professor Martin Kendall, chairman of the Joint Formulary Committee, said the British National Formulary for Children would be available in May 2005. He said: "We hope to provide a document that allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others to treat children with the same competence they treat adults.

At the moment, they can't."

Kendall is negotiating with the Department of Health to buy and distribute the book annually. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is to publish a review of safer and better medicines for children next month.
