Health News: Mental health - Autistic children at risk ofself-harm

A quarter of parents of autistic children say their child has tried to harm or kill themselves, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The office's latest survey of the mental health of children also foundthat one in ten children has a recognised mental health disorder, thesame number as the previous survey conducted in 1999.

Amanda Batten, policy officer for children at the National AutisticSociety, said the Government had acknowledged that mental healthservices for autistic children were inadequate.

"We're aware of children turned away from child and adolescent mentalhealth services because they say that they're not equipped to deal withautistic children. Every local area should have a professional withspecific knowledge," she said.
