Health News: Long-term conditions - Charity will pilot specialistnursing

Children with complex long-term conditions that fall outside traditional nursing specialities will benefit from a pilot project run by the charity WellChild.

The project will hire nurses to provide children with home support andwill be trialled in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and twoyet-to-be-confirmed areas.

Linda Partridge, WellChild's director of family services, said manycharities' approach to providing specialist nurse posts was"condition-led". In contrast, the charity was taking a fresh approach byfocusing on how they could best support a child's needs.

"There are number of nurses working with children with cancer or cysticfibrosis," she said. "But we will be addressing other groups, such asthose who have rare conditions and might not have access to a specialistnurse."

WellChild will run the project in conjunction with local primary caretrusts and a children's trust.
