About 35,000 pupils in Years 1 to 3 - aged between four and seven - willhave access to free meals during the six-month scheme that will run infive areas from this October until March next year.
Minister for schools and skills Maureen Watt said: "We want all ofScotland's people to be healthier and developing the best eating habitsfrom an early age is central to moving that forward. This is about morethan school meals."
The pilot will look at the impact that universal free school meals hason the health of pupils and will ask for children's views on schoolmeals. It will also look at how schools cope with implementing them.
